Big Software Push at Disney

Last week we presented data on Disney’s job listings over a two year spread, indicating a clear shift in hiring priorities toward Tech roles (computer & math, fig. 1 below). Digging deeper into our dataset, we filtered Disney’s tech listings into more granular categories. In fig. 2 below you’ll see the rise in tech listings over the last 6 weeks is helmed by software development roles, which have doubled since the start of the year. Fig. 3 shows software development jobs as a percent of all listings, clocking an increase from ~11% on Jan 1 to nearly 20% as of 2/20/24.

Is Disney resting on its content laurels as the far-and-away leader in licensable content, and reallocating resources to improve the quality of their streaming platforms? Or gearing up for the generative AI arms race?
